Ponce de Leon's
Fountain of Youth

Archaeological Park

Field Trip Information

INTRODUCTION
The Fountain of Youth would like to invite you to experience the history and beauty of a truly unique place. It was here on April 3, 1513 that Ponce de Leon came ashore to landmark and record for all time the first moment in our nation's history... the discovery of the continent of North America. During a sixty-minute tour your students will experience sixteenth century Spanish and Indian history. The Park's well-trained interpreters and guides will present the essentials of our nation's (and St. Augustine's) history in an entertaining, and educational manner.

DESCRIPTION OF PARK
Located on 15 acres fronting the Matanzas River and St. Augustine inlet, the Fountain of Youth Park is one of St. Augustine's most beautiful areas. Here, a mixture of natural beauty and historical atmosphere will be found. A description of some of our park's various shows and interesting programs are listed and described below:

SPRINGHOUSE
This structure houses Ponce de Leon's famous spring of eternal hope. Here the visitor may view the famous fountain and actually sample the water. A unique moving diorama portrays the Indian village of Seloy, the historic landing of Ponce de Leon, and Spain's landmark cross claiming all of North America. One of our knowledgeable guides will provide a condensed history of the discovery and the life of Ponce.

EXPLORER'S DISCOVERY GLOBE SHOW
Housed in total darkness is a two story high globe, spinning on its axis, which depicts the first 100 years of Spanish history in the New World. Routes traveled by Columbus and Ponce de Leon as well as other historical information are lighted. The eight minute presentation is concise and to the point.

NAVIGATOR'S PLANETARIUM
This educational and entertaining presentation reveals how the ancient mariners such as Columbus and Ponce de Leon used celestial bodies in navigation to find their way from the Old World to the New World. The show brings together the viewer and Ponce de Leon under the exact night sky in North America's discovery.

FIRST ENCOUNTERS / TIMICUA 1580 EXHIBIT
Trace the steps of the conquistadors as they explored this "New World" and discovered the Indians who lived here.
